LeEco Le 1s Initial Impressions

LeEco (formely Le Tv) recently announced its budget offering Le 1s in India. Le 1s has generated lot of buzz online for its exquisite all metal design and impressive specs. As much that LeEco clocked around 1 Lakh registrations on Day 1 and over 3 Lakhs in 5 days of launch for their first flash sale happening on 2nd Feb. We have been using our Le 1s since a day, and here we are to share our initial impressions.

LeEco has launched Le 1s in Gold variant. To us, it however looks more like Rose Gold. First thing one notice’s on Metal clad Le 1s is the bezel-less display with back-lit capacitive touch buttons, that gives the phone a very elegant look. Symmetrical industrial design and chamfered edges adds to the overall aesthetics. Le 1s manages to be just 7.6mm thin and is quite comfortable to hold.

LeEco Le 1s is a Dual (Micro and Nano) Sim device with all major Indian GSM, 3G and 4G LTE bands support.

LeEco Le 1s comes with a 5.5 Full HD IPS display (1920 x 1080 Pixels) with a pixel density of 403 PPI . Display on Le 1s looks sharp and has good viewing angles. Le 1s also features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

LeEco Le 1s is powered by 2.2GHz MediaTek Helio X10 64-bit octa-core processor and 3GB RAM. It comes with 32GB internal storage (approx. 24.5GB user available space). However on the downside there isn’t provision for expandable storage. The device is quite responsive and snappy in overall performance without any visible lags and handles multi-tasking with ease. From our previous experience with the same chipset, we feel PowerVR G6200 GPU does seem to be a bit weak for hardcore gaming.

On the software side, LeEco Le 1s runs on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop with eUI skin layer on top. Like other major Chinese smartphones there’s no app drawer on Le 1s too. All the apps stay on the homescreen and can be accessed by swiping across panels. Apps shortcuts and Quick settings can be accessed by pressing Menu button from the home screen as well as lock screen. App shortcuts can be re-arranged and customized. Settings UI on Le 1s does resembles to iOS upto certain extent.

On camera front, LeEco Le 1s has 13 megapixel rear camera with f2.0 Aperture and features Phase-detection Auto Focus, Manual Focus and single LED flash. Camera on Le 1s does deliver crisp shots. At times, some of the images do seem to be overblown in indoor conditions. We’ll be testing the camera more and will share our findings. Le 1s also comes with slo-mo recording. There’s a 5 megapixel selfie shooter on the front, again with f2.0 aperture and 85 degrees wide angle field of view. Le 1s resembles many elements of iOS in Camera interface. There’s 9 filter options that comes handy while clicking an image.

LeEco Le 1s comes with Dolby and DTS sound enhancements. It supports major audio and video formats. Le 1s has decent sound quality on headphones and speakers while indoors. In the noisy environment, speaker volume was less audible. Sound quality during the calls has been decent too. LeEco hasn’t bundled headphones in the box.

LeEco Le 1s comes with 3000 mAh battery. The battery has been holding well on our unit  and seems to be capable of running through out the typical day with moderate usage. It’s worthwhile to note that LeEco has packed 24-watt USB Type-C fast charger in the box. LeEco claims 5 min. of charging on Le 1s gives 3.5 hours of talk time.

LeEco Le 1s also packs fingerprint sensor on the back and works like a charm. It has been accurate for us most of the time. LeEco says Le 1s is the world’s first mirror-surfaced fingerprint scanner. LeEco has also added IR blaster on Le 1s to control Televisions and set-top box. It’s good to see all these added features on a budget smartphone.

LeEco Le 1s is a feature rich device and it tick all the right boxes. LeEco has priced Le 1s aggressively at Rs. 10,999. We are overall impressed with the device and feel it’s a right buy at this price point. The only thing we felt missing was inclusion of expandable storage. Even a hybrid slot would have been a welcome addition, giving option to user to choose between expandable storage or second Sim.
